The 1980s were revolutionary years for sport around the world.

The successful ski racers Harti Weirather and Hanni Wenzel were one of the first to recognize this development. During the years that followed, they significantly contributed to redefining the meaning of sponsorship in sport.

The principle of performance and quid pro quo were newly interpreted.

Weirather’s path was clearly defined from the very beginning: at the young age of 13, he demonstrated the determination, willpower and enthusiasm for ski racing. The start of his own career was marked when he negotiated his first sponsorship contract with ski manufacturer Kneissl. The man, who would later become downhill skiing world champion, will never forget the ski manufacturers’ obligations under this contract, “five pairs of skis and pocket money”.

In the years that followed, Weirather stood firmly on the principle that starts at the top of their sport should be rewarded for outstanding ability and the high risks associated with their profession. In so, he was not only able to achieve the fastest times and win gold medals as an alpine ski racer, but also secure lucrative advertising contracts for himself and his colleagues.
Elite ski racer Hanni Wenzel also connected with the sponsorship business at an early stage. Due to her great successes and charisma, Wenzel was a sought-after frontwoman for equipment suppliers and sponsors. Simultaneously, she was confronted with the negative side of the business and because of her sponsorship activities – she was banned from participating in the 1984 Olympics, an inconceivable circumstance in today’s competitive sporting world. While dominant in her disciplines, she would have been a two-time defending champion…

The more Weirather and Wenzel concerned themselves with sponsoring, the clearer it became that in return for their commitment, sponsors expect comprehensive service. Thus the pair entered a completely new-kind of race in 1987: they founded WWP, Weirather – Wenzel & Partner AG. During WWP’s early days, the power-pair even staged a strength-zapping double act as active racing skiers and tireless event organisers.
